What EXACTLY are astral projections? Are they a specialised case of OBEs? If not what is the difference?

There is no difference. "Astral projection" comes from the psychic/occult side and OBE/OOBE/Out of Body Experience comes from the scientific side. OBE simply describes the perception of being outside one's own body. Astral projection assumes there is an "astral body" being projected from the physical body, which, scientifically, is more than can be demonstrated (for now).
