Hz - KHz Range

So I'm on my way to Best Buy to get a pair of better, more comfortable ear phones. I know headphones would probably work better, but I've still experienced effects with high quality ear phones, and it looks rather tacky to walk around campus with giant Bose headphones on.
I'm looking for a Hz to KHz range I should be in. The SkullCandy ear phones I'm looking at cover everything between 20 Hz to 20 KHz.
There is a sony pair that covers 6 Hz to 23 KHz. (Come to think of it, I might just spend a little more and get these.)
But is there a manditory range I should have?
