Do you have to use the big headphones, or can you just use the ones you put inside your ear?

it all depends on the quality. for example, don't expect to be blown away by the i-pod earbuds. however, i have some nice v-moda buds and they work better than some crappy over-the-ear ones. like i said, it all goes back to quality

For anyone else wondering, the biggest factor that I've found is whether or not the headphones / earphones damper outside noises. There are nice earbuds that expand using soft foam to damper out almost all noise while giving a clear sound. At the same time, I personally use my music studio headphones.
Type of Headphones??????

Unfortunately most of that style of headphones are pretty poor in quality. They are loose and lose some of the sound they send to your ears, and they will cancel out almost no outside interference. Although, the little earbuds that iPods come with are not much better in quality. You should be looking for 1) Quality/clarity of sound and 2) noise-cancellation. Simply put, though, either headphones (like what you mentioned) or earbuds (the ones that go in your ears) will work.
Personally, I use a style similar to what caligirl95070 mentioned; they are headphones, but instead of spongy foam, there are leather pads, and they completely cover your ears. They're "studio headphones" that I use for music studies / editing and such.

I have new ones bought today that go around my ears (panisonic brand payed ~ $60CND) and from waht I've seen so far they work far better then my Ipod earbuds, which hardly worked at all.

Do Skullcandy earbuds work? I have heard a slight bit of system noise in the background when certain programs are up, and I wasn't sure if it was the earuds that aren't good enough, or if the system sounds are too much.
