New to I-doser, old to binaural

Hey guys, new guy here.
I got the iphone app, but years ago I was introduced to binaural brainwaves by a windows program called brainwave generator, or bwgen as it was called. I don't even know if it is still being used. At the time it was cutting edge, it allowed you to experiment with different binaural beats, including changing the carrier waves, adding white noise, pink noise, etc. There was a community of people who came up with different patches for this software, some of them were really effective.
I'm curious, because I've used that for years, but how did the i-doser programmers come up with the binaural frequencies and carrier frequencies to mimic the different drugs? From what I've experimented with the iphone app, the programs are as effective as any in getting me into a "trance" state (the classic mind awake/body asleep hypnotic or meditative state) but I'm not sure that they accurately mimic the experiences I've had with other substances.
